*As per the schema, some nonsense words can have multiple functions. These were settled on a case-by-case basis, attributing the function to rhyme or novel object most frequently in order to avoid double-counting.

The above graphs display the determined functions and parts of speech for the
nonsense words appearing in the works of Dr. Seuss from the 1930s through the 1990s.
The data is displayed by decade, meaning that each bar represents all of the
nonsense words used by Dr. Seuss in a given ten year span. There is neither a
noticeable trend nor shift in the functions and parts of speech of the nonsense
words across the decades; however, it is clear that Dr. Seuss primarily used
nonsense words for naming things, such as Thing 1
and Thing 2,
whether
they be proper names or objects novel to a text. This correlates the data in both
graphs because, as expected, a high usage of nonsense names also indicates an
abundance of nonsense nouns throughout the corpus. These nonsense names also bring
rise to other nonsense parts of speech, such as grinchish,
an adjective
derived from the nonsense proper noun, Grinch.

One measure used in our research was Type Token Ratio (TTR). TTR looks at written or spoken word frequency. Here, the focus was on written word frequency.
Word total counts were calculated in xQuery to count distinct and total word in the 24 works in the corpus. The individual or distinct words are the type. The total count of words in a work is the token. The ratio is the result of dividing the type by token. The greater the number of types to tokens means there is more lexical variety. Low TTRs show little lexical variation. In literature geared towards to children a low TTR is expected. For beginning readers words should repeat at a high frequency.
The 24 individual Seuss books selected in our corpus had a mean TTR of 34%, a minimum of 8% and a maximum of 68%. Looking at all books at once, the TTR was 13%. This suggests the language used is simplistic. The TTR is low because of repetition. It might have been useful to include the standardized type token ratio, to look at each set of 2,000 words, and from there calculate the mean standardized TTR.1
Looking at the use of nonsense within the books, it appears nonsense words once used are repeated frequently, though rarely between books. The TTR mean across the 24 works for nonsense, is 49%. Looking at the summary data, of the 672 total nonsense words, 249 of them are unique for an overall TTR of 37%. The nonsense words when categorized by part of speech were typically classified as nouns with a TTR of 34%.

The initial hypothesis wanted to see if there was an increase in nonsense word use over time. An Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was performed in the program Statistical Analysis System (SAS). The ANOVA was run to see the impact of the independent variable of time in relation to the total nonsense word. Several time variables were created. First, a variable was created for decades of publication. Then a variable was created to split the corpus into two time periods. Time 1 included all works from 1954 and earlier; Time 2 included works after 1954 to 1990. The initial ANOVA’s results were not found to be significant.

Next, a General Linear Model (GLM) was run to see if any of the other independent metadata variables had an influence on the use of nonsense words. This looked at the interactions between Time (1 and 2), Genre (literacy and moral) and Type (prose or rhyme). The data was not normally distributed, but it did show variance.

The test produced a significant finding with the variables of Total Nonsense and Genre. This may have been skewed because out of the 24 works, only 4 were tagged as prose.

prose | 59.75 | 11.201408 | <.0001 |
rhyme | 19.2410714 | 6.9001426 | 0.0131 |
The results of the analysis show there was no significant increase in the use of nonsense words over time. Our results could have been influence by our sample, which only included 44% of the entire Seuss corpus. Also, the works we selected were those available online in various text formats. Most were taken from educational pages, which could have influenced the results.
